Short Film – “Second Time Around”

We are not only a film production company based out of Bradenton but moreover we are teachers and mentors to students at Inspiration Academy. We have been associated with this Christian based private school since it first opened almost two years ago. Jimmy is both our director on set and the film program director in the classroom. The remainder of the team assists Jimmy as needed but when the class exits the classroom, which occurs quite often, the students shadow us and fill critical positions. Learning can occur with a book, but as production personnel know it takes trial by fire and hands on experience to understand that going late is a normal occurrence, scripts get altered often, shot lists get turned upside down and rain can ruin a day. With that said, students at the Inspiration Academy Film Program wrote, produced and edited a short film called Second Time Around. On set they filled positions such as 1st assistant cameraman, script supervisor and grip, to name a few.

In regards to our team, Keenan was the 1st AD, Kevin the DP, Eric the lead grip, Jon was on audio, Lauren assisted the students as a producer and Mark was a grip. Each of us had a minimum of 1 student attached to the hip and we couldn’t be more proud of what they created. The film was shot with our RED Scarlet utilizing cine lenses with a full production team and edited in our very own 4k Editing Suite.

Inspiration Film Fest 2015

Inspiration Film Fest 2015 – what an amazing experience! We had the pleasure of not only sponsoring this premier event for Inspiration Academy, but also being a part of the crew that helped run the show. The Fest was held at Lakewood Ranch Cinemas in Sarasota, FL, the perfect venue for the first Fest (of many to come)! Even more exciting, many of our staff members were judges for the 35 films that were selected from over 100 submissions sent in from all over the world. This was the first Film Festival that Updog Studios has been a part of. A number of our team members have been involved with Film Festivals over the years individually, but this was our first festival working as a team and it was a humbling experience. One of the highlights of the Fest was a Q&A session with our CEO‘s family friend, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., from AMC’s The Walking Dead and HBO’s The Wire. He spoke for nearly an hour answering questions, speaking to filmmakers about his career and giving advice to young students in the audience. We ended the night with Lawrence presenting the awards. Enjoy photos from the Film Festival below! Questions? Let us know in the comment area or email us at info@updogstudios.com.

Doritos Commercials

For the second consecutive year we here at Updog Studios have entered the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl Contest. Last year (2013) it was one of the first projects we embarked on as a newly assembled team. With our concept centered primarily inside a car trapped in traffic we had plenty of extras on the road with our grips rigging some action shots and movements. The camera we used was the Canon 5d Mark iii.

This year (2014) the Inspiration Academy Film Academy students wrote the script with Jimmy as their professor. The remainder of the team, with students shadowing, executed the project. Students filled positions such as 1st assistant cameraman, script supervisor and grip. Jimmy also flew out one of his good friend, a Director from Los Angles, Kevin Wilson (seen on the couch in photo 4). He helped mentor this kids and teach them about directing a commercial, one of his specialties. Kevin won the Doritos competition a few years ago with Sling Baby. Our young actors absolutely nailed the look and feel we were aiming for and the final product still makes us laugh! The RED Scarlet was the camera used on set.

Updog Studios Ragamuffin Movie Film Behind The Scenes

Ragamuffin: The True Story of Rich Mullins

Updog Studios is proud to announce our first feature length film “Ragamuffin: The true story of Rich Mullins.”  The story is based on the life of Rich Mullins, a prodigy musician who rose to Christian music fame and fortune only to walk away and live on a Navajo reservation. According to James Bryan Smith, author of Rich Mullins: An Arrow Pointing to Heaven, “Ragamuffin is a beautiful and moving film that captures one man’s struggle to overcome the trappings of success, and to learn how to accept the unconditional love of God”. Smith continues, “Whether or not you are a fan of Rich Mullins, you will be touched by this movie. It is honest, accurate, and unafraid to show Rich’s scars, yet pointing us all to the deeper truth even if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts.”
James Duke had a hand in the production and release of this film as a producer.

Inspiration Film Academy

The executive producers of Updog Studios consisting of Eddie Speir and James Duke and Inspiration Academy collaborated to establish Bradenton’s first premier film school, Inspiration Film Academy. The academy is located at 7900 40th Ave. W. Bradenton FL 34209. Producers envisioned a film academy that would equip aspiring young filmmakers with the practical knowledge and real-world experience needed to be successful in the movie industry. The mission of the Inspiration Academy Film School is to provide students with a true appreciation and understanding of the film industry and the real world dynamics of production. Inspiration Academy’s mentorship approach allows students to learn the craft of filmmaking from highly trained industry professionals. Instruction takes place in classrooms, the school’s multi-media broadcast room, Updog Studios state-of-the-art 4k editing suite and live movie sets.
